The holiday season is in full swing, and while now is a great time to spend time with family and friends, the New Year celebration is all about you! Each year at this time, people make resolutions to get healthier. Even though getting healthier is an admirable goal, most people think that it is just about diet and exercise.
1. Daily TLC
Maintain straight and not too short toenails and clean your feet daily. End the day with a foot massage using a moisturizing lotion to keep your feet soft and supple.
2. Don’t “Muscle Through” It
In case of pain, we recommend not exercising or running through it, since this could make the injury worse. Whenever you experience pain during activity or exercise, stop right away. R-I-C-E (Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate) is the most effective way to treat a foot injury. If your foot pain persists, consult your podiatrist right away.
3. Proper Footwear
Every 500 miles or after 6-8 months is a good time to replace your shoes. The more often you wear your shoes, the quicker they will wear out.
Listed below are some additional footwear tips that may be helpful:
- To decrease strain while wearing unsupportive shoes, consider custom orthotics while wearing sandals or high heels. Avoid wearing unsupportive footwear as much as possible to preserve your foot health.
- Keep your braces and custom orthotics on. They protect your body during recovery and help prevent injuries from worsening or recurring.
- If you’re participating in a specific kind of activity, you may need special footwear, such as hiking boots or running shoes. Make sure the shoes you wear fit properly and offer any necessary protection to prevent injuries.
4. Schedule Your Annual Exam
If you have any concerns about your foot health, schedule an annual foot care appointment. You shouldn’t ignore conditions like bunions, calluses, and corns. These problems can signal other health issues in the body, such as diabetes or vascular disease.
5. Pace Yourself
In order to live a healthy lifestyle, exercise is essential. Just remember to pace yourself when you begin a new exercise routine. If you push yourself too hard, you could injure your ankles and feet.
