When you run or walk, do your ankles feel wobbly and about to give way? On a daily basis, do your ankles feel achy, sore, and tender? Are your ankles swollen? These are symptoms of chronic ankle instability. Our goal at All-in-One Foot Care Center is to prevent patients from suffering needlessly. There are ways to help with weak ankles, which many people think they have to live with.

  • Exercise and Physical Therapy – for most people, chronic ankle instability is caused by a previous injury or sprain that was not fully rehabilitated. A dysfunctional ankle is influenced by several factors, such as weak supporting muscles, overstretched ligaments, and poor balance. A podiatrist can prescribe proper exercises and therapies after examining your ankle and doing the appropriate diagnostic tests to pinpoint the cause of chronic instability. Physiatrists can give you exercises designed to protect your ankle if you participate in sports or fitness activities on a regular basis.
  • Shoes – obviously, high heels, spikes, and stilettos aren’t a good option if you tend to turn your ankle. Look for shoes with wide, low heels that are more stable. Inform the salesperson you have weak ankles when you buy sports shoes at a fitness shoe store. Your podiatrist can also recommend shoes.
  • Extra Help – bracing of the ankle may be recommended to help stabilize it and reduce the possibility of an ankle injury. You should listen to your body. If you are doing something that causes your ankle to hurt, take a break. While you wait for an appointment with the podiatrist, use the RICE regimen — Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
