Athlete’s Foot: What Is It?

There is no need to be an athlete to get an athlete’s foot, which is a fungal infection.

All ages are susceptible to this annoying condition.

Athlete’s Foot: What Causes It?

Athletes’ foot is usually caused by fungi that belong to a group called dermatophytes, also responsible for jock itch and ringworm. A fungus feeds on keratin, a protein found in hair, nails, and skin, and thrives in closed, warm, moist environments. It is rare for an athlete’s foot to be caused by a non-dermatophyte, such as yeast (Candida).

Mild contagiousness is associated with an athlete’s foot. Towels, shoes, and floors can carry the infection and spread it through direct contact.

You may be more likely to contract an athlete’s foot if you walk barefoot. Susceptibility can also influence your risk of developing an athlete’s foot. An open cut or sore on the feet can cause infection in people with impaired immune systems or diabetes.
